Product Description

OUR BEGINNING

Ragan & Christi were married their sophomore year at Texas State at age 20. They graduated together and both received their BBA (Marketing) degrees in 1987 from Texas State.

Ragan & Christi Bond got started in the coffee roasting business almost by accident.

After Ragan spent fifteen years as a commodities trader in the fast-paced energy sector, the Bonds moved their family from Houston to small-town Brenham, Texas. In 2001, Christi Bond and her sister opened a small coffee shop called Main Street Coffee & Trading/Independence Coffee Co. Shortly thereafter, Ragan started roasting coffee for their shop in his garage. The first year, Ragan roasted 1,800 lbs. of coffee on a 10 lb. Ambex roaster.

OUR GROWTH

In 2018, Christi and Ragan opened a specialty coffee and tea retail destination in Brenham, Texas, called Black Truck ’48 Coffee & Tea Market. The name pays homage to the 1948 Ford black truck the Bonds originally used for coffee delivery and is pictured on Independence Coffee bags. In 2019, Christi and Ragan Bond were named SBA Persons of the Year for Texas. Together with their growing team of 32, they custom and craft roasted a record 700,000 lbs. of coffee in 2019. Moving forward, Independence Coffee Co. continues to brew some good in 2020 by replacing their current single-serve cups with new coffee pods.

OUR MISSION TO YOU

Our roastery is small by most standards. However, we see this as a true advantage. Our size and hands-on approach to coffee and tea allows Independence to measure up to both beginning and seasoned coffee enthusiasts' high standards. While there are many steps that take place in the process of getting Independence Coffee into your cup, here are some that we view as crucial to our continued success.

Our coffees are packaged within hours of leaving our roasters. Many times, our coffees are still warm when we hand-package them. Our commitment to freshness and tight distribution standards has allowed us to deliver our coffees to some bed and breakfasts, gourmet markets and grocery markets the same day they are roasted. Now you can bring that same experience from our home to yours!

Independence Coffee Co.'s mission is to create a passionate community of coffee and tea enthusiasts by providing high quality hand-roasted and packaged 'world' coffees and hand-blended tea products (on time) to our customers while honoring traditional 'old school' roasting and blending methods that pay respect to coffee's rich history...while of course, having a blast doing it.

THE INDEPENDENCE ROAST

Independence has only three roasters on staff One is our original roaster. The other two have been trained by our original roaster in all facets of the roasting and blending process which makes our coffees - OUR COFFEES. This allows us to blend and roast each batch of coffee the same way, every single time.

When a customer finds a favorite roast, it will embody the same roast characteristics each time.

While others may roast in very large batches with minimal variance in timing requirements, the 'Independence Roast' uses time and temperature to guide each roast through several stages. We feel the increased time commitment is well worth creating a deep-roasted coffee that enhance one's coffee experience.

LASTING FRESHNESS

Our 50 count case size are individually wrapped and flushed with nitrogen. Allowing each to have a one-year expiration date.

With the name printed on the packaging, you will always know which Independence Coffee you are about to drink.

This item is an excellent choice for your office or as a handout at your next gathering with family and friends.

OUR COMMITMENT

Independence Coffee's approach is simple. We give to local organizations within our community.

  • The Baylor Park Project Through a licensing agreement with Baylor University, Independence Coffee and Baylor have successfully funded preservation and maintenance projects for the original home of Baylor University founded in 1845 in Independence, Texas. To help benefit the Baylor Project, please visit the Baylor Series shopping page.
  • Brenham High School Special Needs Program The 'Gathering Grounds' project exemplifies how local businesses can impact their community. Special needs students operate a coffee cart that 'travels' around Brenham High School and serves coffee to faculty and staff. In an effort to manage a successful coffee cart program, students gain skills such as helping customers and inventory management. The valuable skills and experience gained from this program assist students in obtaining employment post-graduation.
